About this lesson

In ‘Exploring Contact’, you explore your own body in relation to others. Drawing on the fundamental principles of contact improvisation, partner work and open improvisation, you will work with themes such as sharing weight, leading and following, touch, connection, merging and the dissolution of movement.

The approach to the body is open, attentive and sensitive. The emphasis is on listening: to your own body, to a partner and to what arises in the moment. You learn simple technical skills whilst at the same time developing your sensory perception, body awareness and ability to respond spontaneously.

Yvette, the teacher, draws on her knowledge of contact improvisation, aikido, partner work and open improvisation to help participants enter a state of mindfulness and receptiveness. From this state of mind, dance can emerge in a natural, effortless and spontaneous way.

In improvisation, there are moments when you don’t yet know what the next movement will be. It is precisely within that open space that unexpected and original movements can emerge.

This course is open to everyone and to all those with a curious, inquisitive mind.
